NEW YORK — Verizon Communications Inc. on Monday announced it will invest $30 billion in the next 10 years to build and expand broadband in underserved areas across the U.S.
The investment will support new spectrum infrastructure that will improve broadband service for underserved communities and provide customers with a better experience for online services and content.
Verizon said it will also invest in new fiber optic and wireless infrastructure that would give customers access to better speeds and faster speeds to their homes.
Verizon said the investment will help the company meet its goal of providing 1.5 million Internet-ready homes by 2020.
The company said it expects the investment to increase the number of broadband subscribers in undersized areas, but it will not necessarily result in the same amount of broadband service to those areas.
Verizion’s investments will help it meet its 2020 goal of 1.75 million Internet homes, up from a recent goal of 800,000.
Verizons investment is a continuation of a $300 million commitment it made last year, and the company said the funding will provide access to the broadband infrastructure and support its efforts to expand and improve the quality of its Internet service to underserved people.
Verzion, which announced the investment Monday, is one of the nation’s largest broadband providers.
Verizon Communications is the nation’ largest telecommunications company.
Verity’s broadband investment comes after other broadband companies such as AT&T Inc., Comcast Corp., and Cox Communications Inc., have made similar investments in the past year.
