Comcast has won the rights to lease the next-generation high-speed internet infrastructure from the nation’s largest wireless carrier for $6 billion.
The deal is expected to close in the next three weeks, according to people familiar with the matter.
The transaction would mark Comcast’s biggest investment in its fiber network, which is still in the early stages of construction, and the first major cable provider to sign a major fiber-optic contract in the country.
The $6-billion deal will be one of the largest in the nation and comes as Comcast and its cable partners have been battling to keep up with the pace of the federal government’s push to make broadband a more widespread and accessible service.
The company announced a major broadband plan in November, and in December it announced that it would offer a cheaper, faster option, dubbed Internet Essentials, that includes the same high-capacity network.
It said it would invest $3 billion to deploy the Essentials service over a three-year period.
Comcast also recently won a $3.9 billion contract to operate and maintain fiber optic networks in a dozen rural markets in Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina.
Comcast is the third largest cable operator in the U.S. Comcast said it expects to deliver about 1 million homes and businesses in rural areas by the end of 2019.
Comcast will also invest in new technologies to speed up the process of deploying fiber-based internet.
Comcast’s investment in broadband comes as the U,S.
has struggled to attract more broadband subscribers to the network.
Comcast announced a $35 billion acquisition of Time Warner Cable in January.
